AkzoNobel Renovates Public School for Special Needs Children

AkzoNobel, a leading global paints company, brought cheer to the students at the ‘El-Tarbia EL-Fikrya Public School for Special Needs Children’ in 6th of October City in Egypt with a colorful transformation of their school building.

The renovated premises were unveiled in the presence of The Honorable Mr Laurens Westhoff, Ambassador of the Netherlands in Egypt; Mr. Joost Geijer, Agricultural Counsellor, Economic Department; Mr. Mustafa Beksawy, General Manager, 6th of October City Educational Administration; Rajiv Rajgopal, AkzoNobel Regional Director MEA; AkzoNobel Egypt staff and volunteers; as well as students, parents and teachers.

As part of the project, AkzoNobel built a customized Sensory Development Room fitted with new games, personal development tools and data shows. It will benefit over 200 children, aged 6 to 12 years, who attend the school to enhance their learning ability. As a result of AkzoNobel’s contribution, El-Tarbia EL-Fikrya will be the first local school within the 6th of October City to have a Sensory Development Room.

AkzoNobel also built a football field, repaired the basketball and volleyball grounds, furnished kindergarten classrooms and the adjoining playground and designed and constructed a theatre stage to promote arts. Over 35 employees of AkzoNobel in Egypt volunteered in landscaping the grounds and planting lush greenery.

AkzoNobel Egypt has previously been commended for their efforts as part of the Human Cities project. It was selected as one of the ten best activations on the ‘AkzoNobel 2015 Community Program Best Practices Competition’ for the innovative transformation of Ahmed Zewail Public School in 6th of October City. Over 25 volunteers took part to restore the school, which was in a dilapidated state, and transformed it into a safe, healthy and colorful place for over 3,000 primary and preparatory students.

Launched in 2014, the global Human Cities initiative aims to help the world’s cities deliver a stronger sense of community purpose, pride and happiness.

AkzoNobel regularly organizes community-oriented campaigns in the region. The company’s staff members take part in various initiatives such as the recent blood donation drive organized in Dubai.
