The original center was built in 1504 AD by Sultan Qunsuwah El Ghouri. During the Mamluk era, the Wekalet was one of several trade points, a place where merchants gathered for trade, and also served as a residence for the merchants and their families.  Opened to visitors in 2005, it has quickly become one of the popular landmarks as a cultural hub and the go-to destination for those craving a night of culture and history.

During Ramadan, El Tannoura Traditional troupes perform on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

There is also a permanent exhibition of handmade crafts (pottery, copper, tent fabric and jewellery).
